Why You Shouldn’t Ever Give Up, Even When You’re Old
When we’re younger we often have big dreams and ambitions that fuel us and give us a kind of passion and fire that other people find magnetic. This is one of the great things about being young and it’s one of the things that we tend to lose as we grow older.
It’s the fact that we stop trying that will so often lead to the mid-life crisis. The problem is that we’ve spent our whole young lives dreaming of being a rock star/novelist/astronaut/footballer… but then when we get to the age of 40, we realize that our likelihood of accomplishing that has gotten much smaller. As a result, we give up and at that moment we lose that spark that kept us going. The thing that once drove us is gone and we lose our persistence – that same persistence that actually was a tonic in and of itself.
There’s Always Hope
But there’s no reason for this to be the case. While it may be true that you can’t always achieve the things you want to achieve, the point as we’ve discovered is not really about achieving anyway – it’s about trying and it’s about believing in yourself and in the fact that something good is going to happen.
There’s a saying that says: ‘it’s never too late to be what you’ve always wanted to be’.
What this essentially means is that even when you’re 90, there’s nothing to stop you from being a footballer…
Making it Happen at Any Age
Okay, so that’s not exactly true… but there’s nothing to stop you from playing football on a team of similarly handicapped individuals. And you could definitely be an actor if that was your dream because there are thousands of ‘bit parts’ available for pensioners and those aren’t particularly easy to fill.
Want to be a rock star? Then how about starting your own YouTube channel playing the guitar. Being old could actually be an advantage in that environment – it would certainly give you something to make you stand out.
Or how about you change your dream slightly? Instead of aiming to be a footballer you might realize that really what it was you were interested in was the money anyway – and then focus on setting up an online business.
Again, this might all sound a little bit far-fetched. Maybe it is… But the point is to keep trying. Because the persistent people are the happy ones…
