Why do people have such a difficult time accepting their flaws? We all have them. It’s a fact of life. If you are someone who has been hard on yourself due to your flaws, you need to take a step back and reevaluate that position. It’s time to accept – and maybe even embrace – your flaws.

  1. Your flaws are part of your personality.
While there are certain flaws that you can and should change, you should accept those that cannot be changed. For instance, if you suffer from a chronic illness, you can’t beat yourself up for that. You need to accept it, and learn ways to cope.
  1. Because of your flaws, you have learned how to live your life with those flaws.
This makes you strong. You have lived with these flaws, and you can still maneuver through life in spite of them. This should be looked upon as an advantage. You can handle adversity better than those who do not face those same flaws.
  1. Try to imagine if everyone was perfect and had no flaws.
What would life be like? It turns out, life would be dull and uneventful. The flaws help create your story. They are the foundation for the plot that is your life. It’s what helps make us different and individual.
  1. Remember the saying about what doesn’t kill you makes you grow stronger.
If you can accept your flaws, that will help you improve. It builds your character and gives you experience dealing with obstacles. If you can deal with your flaws, then you can deal with anything.
  1. Flaws help you to see who your real friends are.
Imagine someone you know discovers you have a flaw that they don’t like. If this person jumps ship on your friendship, they were never worth keeping as a friend anyways. Conversely, those who love you no matter what are worthy of keeping as friends.
  1. Associate yourself with people who have accepted their flaws.
You will recognize these people easily, as they will often be confident. They will poke fun at their situations without being overly critical. When you surround yourself with people like this, you can learn about how they accept their flaws.
  1. Admit your flaws.
Don’t try to mask them by pretending they don’t exist. Others will notice the flaws, and it will be seen as a sign of weakness when you try to hide the fact they exist. Not only should you own up to them, but also be proud that they are part of what makes you unique. This will also show people that you are confident and comfortable in your own skin.

ACTIONABLE STEPS

Make a list of your flaws. This can be a difficult exercise as not everyone is willing to be honest with themselves. However, if you are honest with yourself, you will list all of them. When you do this, you can use the list to determine which flaws you want to overcome or simply accept.

Seek out someone with a similar flaw and help them accept it. You can do this by joining support groups, or you’ll see these people in your day-to-day interactions. When you find someone who is struggling with that flaw, give them advice on how you have accepted it.

Create a blog that helps others who are experiencing the same flaw or flaws as you. You would be amazed at how many people share the problem and would love to know more about how to accept those flaws.
